UNICEF U-Report Kicks off in Nigeria

To give a voice to the voiceless and ensure that people especially youths take active role in issues of national importance, Unicef Nigeria has recently launched the U-report intiative.

This user centered social monitoring tool based on simple sms has been set-up to ensure that the voices of Nigerian citizens are heard and opinion recognized.

A platform where you can speak up on the anomalies in your community, join in the decision making process and the development of your nation by reporting what is going on in your environment and responding to surveys.

According to Caroline Barabwoha, UNICEF
Set-up Consultant has revealed that in Just about 5weeks of commencement over 5,000 volunteers has been engaged and there are currently 9,000 U-reporters in the country. This is in sharp contrast with other African countries which takes about a year to get up to 3,000 volunteers.

The goal she further stated is to have 5million active U-Reporters by the end of the year

How It Works
U-report is a simple, easy to use SMS based platform and it is totally free to join, the only requirement is to have a mobile phone not necessarily internet enabled but must have messaging functionality which does exist in mobile phones

Weekly polls are sent on wednesday and results shared on monday, it is easy to comprehend. Plans are currently underway to introduce it in Hausa, Yoruba, Pidgin and Igbo language.
